Your (or your child’s) neuropsychological evaluation will consist of an in-person clinical interview and neuropsychological testing, followed by a telehealth (video) feedback session.
Paperwork
Once your case is accepted, you will receive a secure link that contains paperwork you have to complete prior to the assessment appointment, including a consent form and a medical history form. If you have had prior neuropsychological assessment, you will be asked to upload the report via a secure link (so your current performance can be compared to your prior performance). For parents, you may receive questionnaires to complete about your child’s developmental history and current functioning via secure links prior to the visit.
Clinical interview & neuropsychological testing
The clinical interview and neuropsychological testing will be in-person. For most adults who do not require academic testing, this will be 4-5 hours over the course of one session. For school-aged children and adults who require academic testing, it will take 8-10 hours, split across at least two sessions*. The session will start with a 1-2-hour clinical interview, during which you will be asked about problems in thinking and memory that you are (or your child is) experiencing, as well as a comprehensive review of your medical, psychiatric, and social history. You are encouraged to have a loved one (particularly a household member) join the interview portion of the visit, as oftentimes they can provide valuable information about your thinking and memory problems. The remaining time in the session will be one-on-one neuropsychological testing, which consists of a variety of tasks that challenge your (or your child’s) thinking and memory abilities, including listening to words and stories that you have to remember, paying attention to visual designs and images, and drawing and writing. You are not expected to get 100% correct on the tests. In fact, you will often feel like your are struggling with the tests, but that is because I am pushing you to your limits in order to determine your maximum ability level. All you have to do is to do the best that you can.
*For parents: because we want to maximize your child’s performance during testing, we may need to split testing into more sessions if they have difficulties sustaining their performance.
Feedback
You will be scheduled for a telehealth (video) feedback session approximately one week after the testing session. This will take about 30-60 minutes. During this call, I will go over the test results and recommendations and answer your questions. In order to determine whether the difficulties you are experiencing are beyond what we would expect for your age, your test performance will be compared to other people with similar backgrounds, such as age, sex, and education. You will receive a comprehensive report detailing your performance following the feedback appointment. Any additional calls to follow up on the same evaluation, speaking with other stakeholders like teachers and other clinicians, and completing any relevant paperwork will be included in the same fixed rate, with no additional charge. See Fees & Payment page for more information.
